San Diego Military Family Storage Guide

Military Deployment Storage for Service Members and Families

Military deployment storage should begin with the orders, the household’s housing plan and a clear understanding of any available government moving or storage entitlement. A deployment, permanent change of station, temporary duty assignment and privately purchased storage are not interchangeable.

Vector Moving and Storage can provide a private commercial plan that may include household pickup, partial or full packing, furniture preparation, transportation to the warehouse, mover-managed storage, scheduled access and final delivery. Vector does not decide military entitlement or guarantee reimbursement.

Review Orders and Transportation-Office Guidance Before Buying Private Storage

Military benefits and shipment options depend on the assignment, destination, orders and current rules. A commercial mover should not determine whether a service member qualifies for government-paid transportation or storage.

Deployment

Deployment does not automatically mean the full household moves or qualifies for one standard storage benefit. The family’s housing, lease, access and return plan determine the private-storage need.

Temporary Duty or Training

Temporary duty and training can have different allowances and limits. Confirm what the orders authorize before booking shipment or storage at personal expense.

Private Commercial Storage

Vector’s service is a private moving-and-warehouse-storage option. It should not be represented as government Non-Temporary Storage or automatically reimbursable.

Keep written authorization. When reimbursement matters, obtain the necessary military approval before committing to private moving or storage expenses. Retain orders, counseling documents, contracts, invoices, payment records and weight or inventory records.
Decide What Happens to the Home

The Storage Plan Depends on the Household Plan

Do not begin by estimating boxes or vaults. First decide what happens to the residence and who will need the belongings during the service member’s absence.

The household remains in the current home
Family members move temporarily to another residence
The lease or housing arrangement ends
Only part of the household enters storage
The entire household enters private storage
A PCS overlaps with deployment or return
The home will be sold, rented or renovated
The service member lives alone and needs an authorized local contact

The family should also decide whether routine personal access is essential. Frequent walk-in access may favor traditional self-storage, while mover-managed warehouse storage may fit when pickup, furniture handling and later delivery should be coordinated by one company.

Housing, pickup access and the return destination should be settled before the shipment is divided into private storage and other groups.
Interactive Planning Direction

This tool suggests the next planning step. It does not determine entitlement, legal rights, reimbursement, the final number of moving vaults or a binding price.

Suggested Planning Level

Entitlement and private-storage review recommended

Confirm the official military options first, then compare the remaining private pickup, storage, access and delivery needs.

Keep government and private-storage records separate. The final quote should identify which belongings are part of Vector’s private commercial service.
Keep Two Systems Distinct

Government-Arranged Moving and Private Vector Storage Are Different Services

QuestionMilitary ProcessPrivate Vector Service
Who determines eligibility?Orders, current entitlement rules and the military transportation office. The customer decides whether to purchase private service; Vector confirms operational availability and written terms.
How is it scheduled?Often through DPS and the applicable transportation-office process.Directly through Vector Moving and Storage under a commercial estimate and agreement.
What may be included?Household-goods shipment, unaccompanied baggage, PPM or authorized non-temporary storage depending on the orders.Pickup, packing, furniture preparation, transportation, warehouse storage, scheduled access and final delivery when included.
Who pays?Depends on authorization, allowance, reimbursement rules and required documentation. The customer is responsible under the private contract unless a separate military authorization expressly applies.
Who answers entitlement questions? The local transportation office or official military resource.Vector can explain its own private moving and storage services, not military benefit eligibility.
A military connection does not make every private invoice reimbursable. Obtain the required approval before the expense is incurred and keep all supporting documents.
Build One Complete Inventory

Separate Every Belonging by Destination and Responsibility

Use one written inventory before packing begins. The customer should be able to identify which items are part of the official shipment, Vector storage, a family move, personal travel or disposal.

Item or carton number
Original room and general contents
Condition photographs for important items
Government shipment or private storage
Family temporary residence
Customer or service-member carry
Open-first or partial-retrieval priority
Expected final destination
Recommended destination codes: VECTOR STORAGE, FAMILY RESIDENCE, SERVICE MEMBER CARRY, FAMILY CARRY, OFFICIAL SHIPMENT — VERIFY, SELL/DONATE, DO NOT LOAD and RETURN FIRST.

Keep Critical Items Personally Controlled

Orders, Medication, Identification and Urgent Gear Should Not Enter Ordinary Storage

Military and Legal Documents

Orders, identification, passports, powers of attorney, vehicle and housing records, insurance information and other documents needed during the assignment.

Medication and Security Items

Prescription medication, medical information, keys, access credentials, security devices and other items that require continuous control.

Valuables and Irreplaceable Property

Cash, jewelry, small heirlooms, critical photographs and other belongings the customer chooses to transport personally.

Immediate Professional and Family Needs

Essential uniforms, approved professional gear, children’s necessities, pet supplies, chargers and items needed before final delivery.

A power of attorney can have important legal consequences. Use a military legal-assistance office or another qualified attorney for individualized advice rather than relying on a generic moving-company form.

Pack for the Full Storage Period

Prepare Belongings for Pickup, Warehouse Handling and Later Delivery

Items entering storage may be handled during pickup, warehouse placement and final delivery. Packing should account for the complete storage period—not only the first truck ride.

Use clean, strong and fully closed cartons
Keep carton weights manageable
Label at least two sides
Add box numbers and destination codes
Use mattress and upholstered-item protection as arranged
Keep furniture hardware in labeled bags
Photograph important furniture and electronics
Separate return-first and retrieval groups

Customers may pack eligible contents themselves or arrange partial or full packing. Artwork, mirrors, glass, stone, antiques, safes, pianos and mechanically complex pieces should be disclosed before booking.

Packing, labels and photographs should remain useful even when the return address or delivery date changes.
Furniture and Property Preparation

Review Existing Condition, Access and Specialty Items

The office should know about stairs, elevators, parking, long carries, gates, steep driveways and difficult turns before scheduling. Large or unusual furniture should be photographed and measured.

Document existing scratches and loose parts
Measure furniture and the full exit route
Identify removable shelves and hardware
Use matching item and hardware labels
Disclose glass, stone, antiques and heavy pieces
Confirm eligible disassembly and reassembly

Depending on the item and written service, furniture may be prepared with moving blankets, stretch wrap, mattress protection or other materials. Do not assume every piece can be disassembled or stored in the same way.

Furniture preparation should support both warehouse storage and later delivery to the final residence.
Pickup Access

Send the Complete Route From the Lawful Truck Position to the Home

Military timing does not eliminate ordinary moving-access requirements. The quote and crew plan still depend on the actual property.

Closest lawful and approved truck position
Driveway width, grade and turnaround
Stairs, elevators and long hallways
Gate codes, security and moving hours
Parking-garage height or loading dock
Distance from the truck to the items

When access is hard to describe, send photographs or a short video. A steep driveway, narrow road or restricted loading point may affect the truck, equipment, labor and schedule.

Access conditions should be reviewed before the pickup date, especially when orders or travel limit the customer’s flexibility.
Vector Private Warehouse Storage

Pickup, Moving Vaults, Scheduled Access and Final Delivery

Vector’s private service can coordinate household pickup, furniture preparation, transportation to the warehouse, storage and later delivery. It is not routine public walk-in self-storage and it is not automatically a military entitlement.

Gross Footprint

One vault has a gross mathematical floor footprint of approximately 35 square feet.

Gross Volume

One vault has a gross geometric volume of approximately 262.5 cubic feet.

Gross dimensions are not a usable-capacity guarantee. Vault structure, doorway, furniture shape, moving blankets, stretch wrap, disassembly, fragile items and safe stacking affect the final number of vaults.

Warehouse access, partial retrieval, additional delivery and return to storage must be scheduled through the office. Labor, handling, timing and charges depend on the written agreement.

Plan Communication During the Assignment

Document Contacts, Billing, Access and Delivery Authority

Primary and Backup Contacts

Provide reliable phone and email information for one primary contact and one backup. Avoid conflicting instructions from several family members.

Communication Method

Confirm how the office should handle time-zone differences, limited availability, failed email delivery and urgent schedule changes.

Access Authorization

Identify who may request information, retrieval or final delivery and what written verification the company requires.

Billing and Agreement Records

Keep the contract, invoices, payment method, backup payment plan, inventory and delivery instructions accessible to the authorized contact.

Do not assume a relative can change the account simply because the customer is deployed. Authorization, identity verification and any legal documents should be reviewed before the service member becomes difficult to reach.
Restricted and Sensitive Belongings

Review Storage Eligibility Before Packing

The storage agreement and written instructions control the final decision. Separate restricted, hazardous, perishable and personally controlled items before the crew arrives.

Do Not Pack Normally

Fuel, propane, paint, pesticides, chemicals, fireworks, open liquids, leaking products, perishables and other hazardous or unsuitable contents.

Ask Before Packing

Lithium-battery equipment, wine, artwork, temperature-sensitive property, firearms and ammunition, large safes and regulated or specialty items.

Keep Personally Controlled

Medication, identification, orders, passports, keys, cash, jewelry, financial records, security devices and urgently needed professional equipment.

General Legal Awareness

Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and Storage Liens

General information—not legal advice: Federal law may restrict enforcement of a storage lien against property belonging to an SCRA-protected servicemember. The Department of Justice explains that a lien generally cannot be enforced during military service or within 90 days afterward without a valid court order.

The SCRA does not automatically make private storage free, cancel monthly charges, erase a contract or authorize nonpayment. Whether a person or account is protected, and what a storage provider must do in a specific case, can require legal review.

Service members and family representatives should keep military-status and contact information current, respond to account notices and obtain qualified legal assistance when a lien, default, auction or waiver issue arises.

Deployment Storage Timeline

Plan From Orders to Return or Reassignment

After Orders or Official NoticeReview the assignment, contact the transportation office and avoid assuming which services will be authorized or reimbursed.
Four to Six Weeks Before PickupDecide the housing plan, inventory the household, compare official options with private storage and request written quotes.
Two to Four Weeks Before PickupSort belongings, confirm packing, choose one primary contact, review restricted items and create destination labels.
Final WeekSeparate orders, medication, valuables, uniforms and customer-carried essentials. Confirm access, billing, pickup date and inventory changes.
During the AssignmentKeep contact and payment information current. Schedule retrieval or extend the storage plan through the office rather than through informal instructions.
Return or ReassignmentConfirm the final address, property access, delivery date, room labels, items remaining in storage and any additional stops.
Return and Final Delivery

Update the Plan When Orders or Housing Change

Deployment and assignment dates can change. The delivery address may become a new residence, another city, military housing, a family address or a temporary location. Notify the office before delivery is scheduled.

Confirm the authorized person requesting delivery
Provide the final address and date availability
Confirm stairs, elevators, parking and security
Update room labels and furniture placement
Identify belongings remaining in storage
Disclose additional stops before final pricing
Review eligible reassembly

When the customer wants delivery to another state, the office must review route availability, interstate documents, transportation method and delivery terms before confirming the move.

Military Family Storage Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place household belongings in storage during deployment?
Yes, private storage may be an option. First review the orders and contact the applicable transportation office so you understand whether government-arranged shipment or storage is available and what private service remains necessary.
Does every deployment qualify for government-paid storage?
No. Do not assume that deployment automatically creates one standard storage entitlement. Eligibility depends on the orders, assignment and current rules. Obtain official guidance before committing to private expenses.
What is military Non-Temporary Storage?
Non-Temporary Storage is an official long-term storage option that may be authorized in circumstances such as certain overseas or remote-location PCS orders, retirement or separation. The transportation office should confirm eligibility and current terms.
Should I contact my transportation office before hiring private storage?
Yes, when military entitlement or reimbursement may apply. The transportation office can explain the authorized shipment and storage options associated with the orders.
Is Vector storage a government military storage entitlement?
No. Vector provides private commercial moving and warehouse-storage services. It should not be described as government Non-Temporary Storage or automatically reimbursable.
Can Vector pick up and store an entire household?
A full-household private plan may be reviewed based on the inventory, property access, packing, storage space, schedule and final delivery. Availability and charges are confirmed in writing.
How large are Vector moving vaults?
Each moving vault is approximately 5 feet wide × 7 feet long × 7.5 feet high. That equals 35 square feet of gross floor footprint and 262.5 cubic feet of gross geometric volume. Actual capacity varies.
Can a spouse, partner or family member access the stored belongings?
Access depends on the written storage agreement and authorization on the account. Identify authorized contacts and the required identity or legal documentation before deployment.
Can only part of the shipment be retrieved?
Partial retrieval may be possible when scheduled through the office. Detailed inventory and return-first labels help, and labor, handling, timing or delivery charges may apply.
What should remain with the service member or family?
Keep orders, identification, passports, medication, keys, cash, jewelry, financial and legal records, security credentials, immediate uniforms or professional equipment, and irreplaceable small belongings under personal control.
Can uniforms or professional gear enter private storage?
Some nonessential belongings may be suitable for storage, but anything needed during the assignment or immediately after return should remain outside ordinary storage. Official shipment rules for professional gear are separate and should be confirmed through the transportation office.
What items should not enter moving-vault storage?
Separate fuel, propane, paint, chemicals, pesticides, fireworks, perishable food, open or leaking liquids, medication, plants, damaged batteries and other restricted or sensitive belongings. Review the full storage-restrictions guide and agreement.
How should boxes be labeled during deployment?
Include the room, general contents, box number, destination group and retrieval priority. Use codes such as VECTOR STORAGE, OFFICIAL SHIPMENT — VERIFY, FAMILY RESIDENCE, CUSTOMER CARRY, DO NOT LOAD and RETURN FIRST.
What happens when the deployment or return date changes?
Notify the office before the storage end date or delivery is scheduled. Extended storage, changed destinations, partial retrieval and rescheduling can affect availability and charges under the agreement.
Can Vector deliver stored belongings to a different city?
A changed local, California or interstate delivery may be reviewed. Route availability, transportation method, documents, access and final price must be confirmed before scheduling.
Does the SCRA affect storage liens?
The Department of Justice explains that a storage lien generally cannot be enforced against an SCRA-protected servicemember’s property during military service or within 90 days afterward without a valid court order. This does not automatically cancel storage charges or the agreement. Obtain legal advice for a specific case.
Is private storage automatically reimbursed by the military?
No. Private storage should not be assumed reimbursable. Obtain the required military authorization before incurring the expense and keep orders, approvals, invoices, payment records and other required documentation.
What information is needed for a deployment-storage quote?
Provide the pickup address, complete inventory, photographs, packing needs, property access, expected storage duration, scheduled-access needs, authorized contacts and the known or possible final delivery plan.
