Moving From San Diego to a Los Angeles Apartment: A Move-In Checklist

The moving truck needs more than your new address. It needs a workable route from the street to your apartment.

A San Diego to Los Angeles apartment move brings together two schedules: when your belongings can leave the old home and when the new building can receive them. Before confirming the move, get clear answers about keys, unloading space, elevator access and the building’s moving hours.

Use this checklist to organize those details. For transportation, packing and delivery options, visit our San Diego to Los Angeles movers page.

01 / ACCESSGet the building’s approval

Confirm the entrance, elevator, paperwork and person who can let the crew in.

02 / TIMINGConnect both properties

Give your mover the pickup restrictions and the full delivery window.

03 / BACKUPDecide what happens if plans change

Discuss missed access windows or delayed keys before the truck is loaded.

Start with the property manager

Confirm these eight details before booking the delivery window

Ask for the building’s written move-in instructions. Treat the items below as questions to confirm for your address; they are not rules that apply to every Los Angeles apartment.

1. Keys and possession

When can you collect keys, fobs and garage controls? Can furniture arrive that day? Identify who handles access if the leasing office is closed.

2. Approved moving hours

Confirm the date, earliest start, required finish and any weekend restrictions. Ask whether the deadline means unloading must finish or the truck must leave.

3. Elevator reservations

Ask which elevator movers may use, whether it needs a reservation, who installs padding and whether someone must unlock or operate it.

4. Loading entrance

Get the entrance or dock address, not just the mailing address. Confirm gate controls, vehicle clearance and the path from unloading to your unit.

5. Insurance paperwork

If a certificate of insurance is required, send the exact instructions and submission deadline to your mover. Ask management to confirm acceptance.

6. Common-area protection

Ask about floor runners, doorway protection, elevator padding and any restrictions on carts. Share the written requirements before the crew arrives.

7. Deposits and inspections

Check whether the building requires a move-in fee, deposit or common-area inspection. Record who pays it and what must happen before access is approved.

8. A delivery-day contact

Get a contact who can resolve a locked door, occupied loading area or elevator problem during the reservation—not only a general office inbox.

Send the actual building instructions to your mover.

A short description such as “there is an elevator” misses the details that affect unloading. Include reservations, loading directions, measurements and the manager’s contact information.

Los Angeles curb access

Resolve truck parking separately from building access

A reserved elevator does not reserve public curb space. Ask your mover what truck dimensions and unloading area are needed, then confirm an appropriate location with the property manager and the authority responsible for that street.

For an address within the City of Los Angeles, the LADOT frequently asked questions page directs temporary no-parking sign inquiries to its Special Traffic Control Division. Use the current official instructions to ask about eligibility, arrangements, fees and timing for your location.

“Los Angeles area” can also mean a neighboring city. If your destination is in Santa Monica, West Hollywood or another separate municipality, check that city’s process instead of assuming Los Angeles city procedures apply.

  • Photograph the proposed unloading location and all nearby parking signs.
  • Confirm that the location works for the actual truck and the full unloading period.
  • Assign responsibility for any required application or sign arrangements.
  • Ask what to do if the planned space is unavailable on delivery day.

From the curb to your room

Check the tightest point along the furniture route

A sofa can fit through the apartment door and still have trouble at an elevator entrance or hallway turn. Measure large pieces before deciding what to take, and give your mover photos of any tight access points.

Furniture measurements

What is being carried?

  • Width, height and depth of sofas, headboards and large cabinets.
  • Removable legs, shelves or sections, where applicable.
  • Heavy, fragile or unusual pieces that need separate review.

Building measurements

Where must it pass?

  • Door openings and elevator entrance dimensions.
  • Usable elevator interior and posted capacity.
  • Hallway turns, stair landings and low overhead clearances.

Send measurements and photographs for assessment rather than assuming every item can be tilted, disassembled or carried upstairs. Do not plan on hoisting furniture or removing building fixtures unless a suitable provider and the property manager have specifically approved the work.

For a walk-up, document the floor, stair configuration and landings. For a building with a garage, confirm the truck’s access separately from your own car’s access.

Two properties, one workable schedule

Build the move around access windows, not a navigation estimate

The drive is only one part of a San Diego to Los Angeles apartment move. Furniture preparation, loading, travel, building check-in and unloading all need time. A passenger-car travel estimate cannot tell you when an apartment move will finish.

  1. Share both sets of restrictions

Give Vector the San Diego pickup hours and the Los Angeles delivery window before confirming the schedule.

  2. Confirm the delivery arrangement

Ask whether the proposed pickup and delivery dates are workable for your shipment. Get the agreed schedule in writing.

  3. Choose a receiving contact

Arrange for someone authorized to receive the shipment and direct placement, with working keys and access information.

  4. Agree on a delay procedure

Decide who contacts the building if arrival changes and what options and charges apply if the reservation is missed.

Use Caltrans travel resources for current highway conditions and traffic information. Coordinate arrival updates with your mover; road information alone does not confirm the crew’s delivery time.

A message you can reuse

Ask the building for a complete move-in plan

Send this message to your new property manager, then forward the response and any attachments to your moving coordinator.

Subject: Move-in access and delivery requirements

Hello, I’m arranging a household move from San Diego to my new apartment. Before confirming the moving schedule, could you send me the building’s move-in instructions and confirm:

  • When I can collect keys and begin bringing furniture into the unit.
  • The available moving dates, start times and finish deadlines.
  • How to reserve the elevator or loading area.
  • The correct truck entrance, unloading location and clearance limits.
  • Any insurance documents, protection requirements, fees or deposits.
  • Who can help with access on delivery day.

Please also let me know the procedure if the moving truck is delayed or the reserved elevator becomes unavailable. Thank you.

Keep the confirmed address, apartment number, delivery window, loading instructions and contact details together in one move-in note. Share gate codes privately with the coordinator rather than posting them publicly.

Pack for the apartment you are moving into

Give boxes a destination and a priority

Label each box on the top and a side with its destination room, brief contents and any handling instructions. Match room names to a simple apartment floor plan so “Bedroom 2” means the same thing to everyone.

Prepare a first-night group with bedding, towels, toiletries and basic kitchen supplies. Carry keys, identification, medication, valuables and essential electronics with you. Keep building paperwork accessible through your phone or a separate folder.

If you need help with fragile items or selected rooms, review our San Diego packing services and identify those items when requesting the move.

If the apartment is not ready

Make a backup plan before the San Diego move-out date

If keys, renovations or building approval are uncertain, tell your mover before loading. Do not assume the shipment can remain on a truck overnight or that a missed reservation can be moved to the next morning.

Ask about moving and storage options if pickup must happen before the apartment is ready. Confirm availability, handling, storage charges, access to stored items and the later delivery arrangement in writing.

Keep essentials outside the storage shipment.

Set aside enough everyday items for the possible gap. If you may need something before final delivery, discuss retrieval arrangements before it is loaded.

Check the mover and the written scope

This route stays within California. Use the California BHGS household mover license search to check licensing and read its consumer guide to household moving before hiring. Make sure the written documents address your shipment, selected services and disclosed access conditions.

Common planning questions

San Diego to Los Angeles apartment moving FAQs

Can pickup and delivery happen on the same day?

Ask Vector to assess the exact addresses, inventory, packing needs and building hours. Same-day delivery should only be part of your plan when it has been confirmed for your move. A short drive estimate is not a delivery commitment.

Does every Los Angeles apartment require a moving permit?

Requirements depend on the property and the street authority. Building approval, elevator reservations and any public-street parking arrangements are separate matters. Ask the manager about the building and the relevant city authority about curb access.

What if my building requires a certificate of insurance?

Send the building’s exact requirements and deadline to Vector before moving day. Ask the building to confirm that it has accepted the requested documentation; submitting a request is not the same as having access approved.

What information should I send for a moving quote?

Provide both addresses, inventory, preferred dates, packing needs, stairs or elevators, loading locations and large-item measurements. Include building instructions and any possible storage gap. Report changes before moving day so the plan can be reviewed.
