San Diego to Las Vegas Moving Checklist: Prepare Your New Home
Before the furniture arrives, make sure the keys, utilities and delivery access are ready.
Moving from San Diego to Las Vegas involves two schedules: your household’s arrival and your furniture delivery. This checklist helps you connect them, prepare the Nevada property and keep everyday essentials available while you settle in.
If you are comparing moving services or requesting an estimate, start with our San Diego to Las Vegas movers page. Use this guide to organize the destination details before pickup day.

Confirm possession, utilities and the rooms that need to function first.
Confirm the truck entrance, parking, gates and any building reservations.
Keep essentials with you and plan for any gap before delivery.
Start with the calendar
Confirm three dates before arranging your arrival
A personal driving estimate does not establish a moving truck’s delivery appointment. Write down the San Diego pickup date, the time you can legally take possession in Nevada and the mover’s agreed delivery date or period.
Get the keys confirmed
Ask the landlord, agent or seller who releases the keys and when. Include the unit, garage, pedestrian gate and service entrance. Save an after-hours contact if your travel runs late.
Match the delivery arrangement
Tell the moving coordinator about limited receiving hours before reserving a loading dock or elevator. Confirm who will receive the shipment if you cannot be there.
A lease may begin Friday, but key collection might not be available until the afternoon. A Friday morning elevator reservation would not solve that gap. Confirm the handover time before agreeing to the building appointment.

Make the property usable
Arrange utilities and check the cooling system
Before leaving San Diego, confirm which utilities you must start yourself and which the landlord or association provides. An active account and a functioning appliance are separate checks: ask someone with authorized access to confirm the home is ready.
Before you travel
Set up the essentials
- Confirm electricity and water start dates for the correct address and unit.
- Ask about any activation visit that requires you to be present.
- Schedule internet separately if work or school depends on it.
- Obtain the property manager’s maintenance contact.
Before unloading
Check the actual home
- Test the air conditioning when access is available and cooling is needed.
- Check lights, water and the path from the entrance to each room.
- Resolve unfinished cleaning or repairs that would block furniture placement.
- Choose a separate place for children and pets during unloading.
Check the National Weather Service Las Vegas forecast for your arrival dates. Discuss weather-related changes with the mover and building manager. Do not assume an early-morning delivery is available until both have confirmed it.
The last few hundred feet matter
Confirm the address, jurisdiction and unloading entrance
The Las Vegas Valley extends beyond the City of Las Vegas. Check the exact address using the city’s official “Am I in Las Vegas?” lookup before relying on city-specific guidance. Henderson, North Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County have their own authorities; private-property rules need a separate check.
Ask management where a moving truck should enter, rather than sending only the entrance you use in your car. A resident garage, visitor gate or lobby may not be the approved delivery route.
House or gated community
Confirm guard check-in, vehicle restrictions, parking permission and room to turn. Send photographs of tight gates, slopes or overhead obstructions to the mover.
Apartment or condominium
Ask about moving hours, elevator bookings, certificates of insurance and the walking route from truck to unit. Measure large furniture against doors and tight turns.
High-rise or loading dock
Request dock dimensions, clearance, service-elevator size and security instructions. Send these to the coordinator before the truck is assigned.
For addresses inside city limits, use the City of Las Vegas parking and transportation resources to find the appropriate contact. A building reservation does not establish permission to occupy public curb space.
Pack for the gap before delivery
Separate what travels with you from what opens first
A box labeled “open first” still travels with the shipment. Anything you need before delivery belongs in your personal travel kit instead.
Keep in your possession
Your arrival kit
- Keys, identification and moving documents.
- Medications and personal valuables.
- Chargers, essential work equipment and travel contacts.
- Clothing, toiletries and supplies for children or pets.
- What you need for an overnight stay before the shipment arrives.
Label within the shipment
Your first-use boxes
- Bed linen, towels and bathroom basics.
- Everyday dishes and basic kitchen items.
- Home-office accessories you can wait to receive.
- Clearly identified furniture hardware.
- Room names that match the destination floor plan.
For heat-sensitive belongings, follow the manufacturer’s transport and storage guidance and discuss handling with the mover. Do not assume ordinary truck transport or warehouse storage includes temperature control. Review items movers cannot transport before packing garage, cleaning or outdoor supplies.
If packing is still unfinished, arrange full or partial packing services in advance. Identify the rooms and fragile items that need help.

When the dates change
Have a plan if the Las Vegas home is not ready
A delayed closing, unfinished repair or missed key handover can affect delivery. Contact the moving coordinator as soon as a problem becomes likely, then confirm the revised arrangement in writing.
You arrive before the furniture
Plan somewhere to sleep and keep enough personal supplies with you. Allow flexibility for internet installation, work commitments and other appointments.
The home cannot receive the shipment
Ask about storage, rescheduling, handling and later delivery charges. Confirm the location and terms; do not assume space or immediate warehouse intake is available.
The building changes your reservation
Send the new hours to the mover before accepting them. Ask management what happens if the truck cannot complete unloading within the revised appointment.
If a gap is expected, discuss moving and storage options when requesting your quote. Identify any belongings you may need during storage before they are loaded.
Save this checklist
Send one delivery brief to your moving coordinator
Putting the destination details in one message helps everyone work from the same information. Include:
- Address: complete street address, unit, property name and correct truck entrance.
- Possession: date and time keys are available, plus who will receive the shipment.
- Contacts: your phone number, an authorized backup and the building or gate contact.
- Access: approved unloading location, stairs, elevators, clearances and carrying distance.
- Reservations: moving hours, dock or elevator confirmation and required building documents.
- Home readiness: utility start dates, unfinished work and any unavailable rooms.
- Placement: room labels, large-item measurements and first-use priorities.
Use Caltrans QuickMap and Nevada 511 for road conditions before traveling. Confirm the shipment’s schedule directly with the moving coordinator.
Receiving an interstate shipment
Keep your documents available on delivery day
Before booking a California-to-Nevada move, check the carrier through the FMCSA household goods mover search. Keep the estimate, bill of lading, inventory and agreed delivery details accessible during the move.
At delivery, show the crew the room plan, review items against the inventory and record visible damage or missing items before signing the delivery paperwork. Retain your copies. The FMCSA moving checklist provides official guidance for planning, pickup and delivery.
Common arrival questions
Planning your move from San Diego to Las Vegas
Should I book an elevator before confirming delivery?
Ask about available slots early, then coordinate the actual reservation with the mover’s written delivery arrangement. Tell the coordinator about strict building hours before booking the move.
Does a “Las Vegas” address tell me which parking rules apply?
Check the exact property’s jurisdiction and the rules for its loading area. The valley includes several cities and unincorporated areas. Private buildings and associations may also have their own access requirements.
Can I leave my first-night essentials in an “open first” box?
Only if you can wait until the shipment arrives to use them. Keep travel essentials in your own possession, and use first-use labels for belongings you need after unloading.
What if my air conditioning or utilities are not working?
Contact the property manager or responsible provider and tell the moving coordinator if the problem affects delivery. Confirm how the issue will be handled before the shipment arrives.
