Moving From San Diego
to the Bay Area: A Move-In Access Checklist
Moving from San Diego to San Jose or San Francisco involves more than choosing a pickup date. Your new home also needs to be ready to receive the shipment: someone must have the keys, the truck needs a lawful unloading location, and any building reservations need to match the delivery arrangement.

Before the truck heads north
Three confirmations. One coordinated move.
Confirm when you can enter the home, where the truck can unload and when your building allows furniture deliveries. Share all three with your moving coordinator before finalizing reservations.
Know who has the keys and when your new home becomes accessible.
Confirm the unloading location and any permit or signage arrangements.
Match the elevator or loading-dock booking to the confirmed delivery plan.
Match the keys, building reservation and delivery plan
A lease start date does not necessarily tell you when someone will hand over the keys. Likewise, a reserved elevator does not establish the moving company’s arrival time. Confirm each arrangement separately, then check that they work together.
- Possession: Who releases the keys, at what time, and where? Confirm access to the unit, garage, gates and service entrance.
- Building access: What moving hours are allowed? Ask whether the elevator, loading dock or service corridor requires a separate reservation.
- Delivery: What date or delivery period has the moving company confirmed in writing? Who will provide updates?
For example, an elevator reservation from 9 a.m. to noon will not work if the leasing office cannot release your keys until 1 p.m. Resolve that conflict before the truck is scheduled to unload.

02 · Destination planning
San Jose: plan the unloading entrance and curb access
Start with the exact property. A downtown apartment, a North San Jose managed community and a house in Willow Glen can have very different receiving arrangements. Ask for the entrance used for furniture deliveries; the address shown on a leasing advertisement may lead visitors to a lobby rather than the approved unloading area.
Send your mover the unit number, receiving contact and any instructions about gates, loading areas or vehicle clearance. For a house, photograph the driveway entrance and the street where you expect the truck to stop. Let the mover assess whether the planned approach suits the assigned vehicle.
If curb space needs to be reserved, review the City of San Jose’s transportation permit guidance. The City recommends submitting Tow-Away Permit applications at least two weeks in advance. Ask who will handle the application, payment, signs and any required follow-up; do not assume these tasks are included in your moving booking.
A city parking arrangement and a building reservation serve different purposes. Confirm both when they apply, and check the City’s current instructions before committing to a date.
03 · Destination planning
San Francisco: coordinate the curb and building
When planning a San Francisco delivery, ask the property manager to describe the entire unloading route. The truck location, service entrance and elevator may be on different sides of the building. Stairs or a sloping approach may also affect how furniture reaches the home.
Request written answers to these questions:
- Which street and entrance should the moving crew use?
- Does management require a certificate of insurance or other documents, and when are they due?
- Is there a service elevator, and does the reservation cover enough time for the shipment?
- Are there restrictions on truck size, loading-dock use or weekend deliveries?
- Who can resolve an access problem when the crew arrives?
The SFMTA temporary signage program provides temporary tow-away signs for moving vans. SFMTA currently asks for at least five business days between an application and the enforcement date, excluding legal holidays. Its instructions also specify different advance posting requirements for metered and unmetered spaces.
Check the current requirements for your location and coordinate the requested dates with your mover. An approved elevator appointment does not reserve the street, and temporary signage does not replace other parking restrictions or building rules.
Check the furniture path before packing the final boxes
A room can have enough space for a sofa even when the route into that room does not. Measure large pieces and the narrow points along the planned delivery path. Include door openings, stair turns, landings and elevator doors where relevant.
If you cannot visit the destination, ask the property manager or someone you trust to collect measurements and photographs. Useful views include the street approach, unloading area, entrance, stairs, elevator and the tightest hallway turn.
Send this information before pickup so the mover can identify questions about disassembly, carrying distance or special handling. A photograph alone does not prove that an oversized item will fit. If an item needs another solution, discuss it before it leaves San Diego.
Label for the destination and keep arrival essentials with you
Use the same room names on your boxes and destination floor plan. Labels such as “Bedroom 2 — upstairs” or “Office — first floor” help the crew place items without asking you about every carton. Put labels on more than one side so they remain visible when boxes are stacked.
Make a short list of items you would like accessible early, such as bedding, towels and basic kitchen supplies. Discuss loading and unloading priorities with the crew; safe loading and the shipment arrangement determine what is practical.
Keep keys, identification, medication, important documents, chargers and essential work equipment with you. Pack enough personal supplies for your travel and confirmed delivery period, including any planned stay in temporary housing.

Make a backup plan if the home is not ready
A delayed key handover, unfinished flooring or a changed building appointment can disrupt delivery. Contact your moving coordinator as soon as a problem appears. Explain whether the entire home is unavailable or only certain rooms cannot receive furniture.
Ask what arrangements are available and obtain the revised scope, charges and scheduling terms in writing. Waiting, a different delivery appointment, additional handling or storage may need to be discussed; availability depends on the move.

Keep anything needed during the gap with you, and tell the coordinator which belongings are intended for storage versus immediate delivery.
Send one completed move-in checklist to your coordinator
Keep these details in a single note that you can update and share. Send gate codes and other access credentials privately to the people who need them.
- Destination: Full address, unit number and floor.
- Keys: Handover date, time, location and contact.
- Receiving person: Name, mobile number and a backup contact.
- Building contact: Manager or concierge, phone number and availability.
- Delivery arrangement: Confirmed date or period and the contact for updates.
- Truck access: Approved street or loading area, restrictions and clearance details.
- Parking or signage: Responsible person, approval status, dates and posting instructions, if applicable.
- Building reservation: Elevator or loading-dock appointment and permitted moving hours.
- Documents: Any insurance paperwork or building forms, including deadlines.
- Furniture path: Stairs, narrow turns, measurements, photos and known concerns.
- Room plan: Destination labels and furniture placement instructions.
- Backup arrangement: Who to contact if keys, parking or building access change.
Recheck the information shortly before delivery. Tell the coordinator about changes directly; updating a shared note alone may not alert everyone who needs to know.
Before moving day
Questions about moving into San Jose or San Francisco
Does every Bay Area move need a parking permit?
No single answer applies to every address. The relevant city rules, posted restrictions and planned truck location determine what needs to be arranged. Check the receiving property’s instructions and the official parking or permit resource for that city.
Can I book the elevator before my delivery date is confirmed?
You can ask management about availability and reservation requirements early. Before making a firm reservation, compare its hours with the moving company’s written delivery arrangement and explain any limits to your coordinator.
What if I will not be at the destination?
Ask the mover what authorization is needed for someone else to receive the shipment. That person should have access to the property, the room plan and a way to reach you for decisions. Confirm any document or payment responsibilities beforehand.
Can my furniture arrive on the same day I drive north?
Your personal travel schedule does not establish the shipment’s delivery time. Use the written moving arrangement to plan when someone must be available, and discuss any specific timing requirement before booking.
